What does the Best ATR Indicator for NinjaTrader 8 do?
The Best ATR Indicator plots the Average True Range, a measure of market volatility, in NinjaTrader 8. It also shows the market's ATR from up to two weeks ago, so you can see how volatility has changed over time and how it compares with the daily ATR. It adds multi time frame calculation, three ATR formulas, a points or ticks display, slope-based color and alerts.
What does ATR measure in trading?
Average True Range measures volatility over a set period. It is a moving average of the True Range, which is the largest of three values: the current high minus the current low, the distance from the current high to the previous close, and the distance from the current low to the previous close. ATR is direction-neutral, so it tracks how much price is moving whether the market is going up or down.
How is the Best ATR Indicator different from the ATR built into NinjaTrader 8?
Compared with the default NinjaTrader ATR, the Best ATR Indicator lets you pick one of three formulas, Arithmetic, Wilder or Exponential, and calculate it from a simple or exponential moving average. It also displays ATR in points or ticks, colors the line by its slope, adds multi time frame support and alerts, and shows the two-week ATR history for volatility context.
What ATR settings can I change in NinjaTrader?
With the Best ATR Indicator you can choose the ATR formula (Arithmetic, Wilder or Exponential), calculate it from a simple (SMA) or exponential (EMA) moving average, and display the value in points or ticks. You can color the ATR line by its slope to see at a glance whether volatility is rising or falling, and choose any secondary data feed for multi time frame calculations.
How do I use ATR to set a stop loss in NinjaTrader?
ATR shows how far price typically moves, so many traders place a stop at a multiple of it. For example, if ATR is 6 points, a stop of 1 to 2 times ATR is 6 to 12 points away. Showing ATR in points or ticks makes that math quick. To trail a stop by ATR automatically, Advanced Exit Orders Management in the Enhanced Chart Trader includes an ATR trailing stop.
Can I see the daily ATR on an intraday chart?
Yes. The multi time frame option lets you add the Best ATR Indicator to any chart window and point the ATR calculation at any secondary data feed, such as daily bars, while you trade a minute, tick or range chart. Together with the two-week ATR history, that shows how current movement compares with the market's normal daily range.
