NinjaTrader Says Connected but There Is No Data

The status says Connected. The light is green. The charts have not moved in twenty minutes. This is the most dangerous connection failure there is, because nothing on screen tells you anything is wrong, and a scalping decision made against a frozen chart is a decision made against a price that no longer exists.
Connected does not mean receiving
NinjaTrader tracks two separate things per connection: the order session and the market data feed. They can fail independently. An order session that is up and healthy will keep reporting a connected state while the data feed behind it has stopped delivering ticks entirely.
This is why a single connection indicator misleads. It is answering a narrower question than the one you are asking.
Working out whether the feed is actually dead
The first thing to establish is whether the market is quiet or the feed has stopped. Overnight, in a thin contract, twenty minutes without a tick can be legitimate.
- Check a liquid contract. Front-month ES prints constantly during the session. If ES is frozen during regular hours, the feed is dead, not the market.
- Check more than one instrument. A single frozen chart is more likely a chart or subscription problem than a connection problem.
- Check the Log tab. The Control Center log records subscription warnings that never surface on the chart itself.
Common causes
An unsigned data agreement. Rithmic and Tradovate both require market data agreements accepted in the provider portal. Until that is done you can connect successfully and receive delayed data or none at all.
A lapsed subscription. An expired card on the data subscription produces a real-time data required message, or delayed data, rather than a connection failure.
Instruments not subscribed. NinjaTrader will warn that instruments not subscribed for real-time data have been detected. The specific symbols appear in the Log tab, not in the warning.
An expired contract. Futures roll quarterly. A chart still pointing at an expired contract will never update again, and the platform will not necessarily say so plainly.
Platform load. Too many charts on an underpowered machine will stall updates. Four to six charts per workspace is a reasonable working limit.
A genuinely stalled feed. Sometimes the connection simply needs cycling. Disconnect, wait several seconds, reconnect.
The underlying problem
Every item above is findable. The difficulty is that you have to go looking, and you only go looking once you have already noticed something is wrong, which with a silent failure can be a long time after it started.
Watching the order session and the data feed as two separate indicators, per connection, is what makes a silent failure visible. That is why the health window in Unlimited Prop Firm Connections shows two lights per connection rather than one, and keeps a timestamped history so a drop that happened while you were away is still on the record when you get back.
