Anchored VWAP in NinjaTrader 8: What It Is and How to Use It

A normal VWAP starts over at the beginning of every session. An anchored VWAP starts wherever you tell it to: a swing low, the overnight high, yesterday’s close, the bar a news release hit. From that bar on, it shows the average price paid by everyone who traded since then, weighted by how much they traded.

That makes it one of the most useful lines you can put on a futures chart, because it answers a question price alone cannot: are the traders who got involved at that moment winning or losing right now?

This guide covers what anchored VWAP is, where to anchor it, how to read it, and the two ways to put one on a NinjaTrader 8 chart.

What anchored VWAP actually measures

VWAP is the total dollars traded divided by the total contracts traded. The only difference between a session VWAP and an anchored VWAP is where the counting starts.

Anchor a VWAP to the low of a selloff and the line tells you the average entry of every contract traded since that low. If price is above the line, the average buyer since the low is in profit, and those traders tend to defend it. If price falls back below the line, the average buyer since the low is now losing, and that is often when a bounce fails.

The idea is not new. Brian Shannon, who wrote a book on the subject, is the name most traders associate with it, and his approach is the reason “anchored VWAP” is its own search term today.

Where to anchor a VWAP on futures

The anchor should be a moment when something changed. On ES, NQ, CL or GC, the anchors that tend to matter:

  • A major swing high or low. The most common anchor. It shows where the move’s participants are on average.
  • The regular session open (9:30 AM ET for index futures). Many traders watch this VWAP instead of the one that starts on the 6:00 PM ET Globex open.
  • The overnight high or low. Useful on the open, when price tests where the overnight session stalled.
  • The prior day’s high, low or close. A clean reference for gap days.
  • A news bar. CPI, FOMC, NFP. The anchored VWAP from that bar shows whether the reaction is being accepted or faded.
  • The highest-volume bar of the session. Where the most business was done is often where the next fight happens.
  • The start of the week, month, quarter or year. These are anchored VWAPs too, just fixed to the calendar.

Avoid anchoring to random bars. If you cannot say in one sentence why that bar matters, the line will not matter either.

How to read an anchored VWAP

Side. Price above the line means the traders since the anchor are, on average, in profit. Below means they are underwater. That is the whole bias read.

Tests. In a trend, the first pullback to an anchored VWAP from the start of the move is a classic entry. The traders who got in are defending their average price.

Breaks and reclaims. When price closes through an anchored VWAP that had been holding, and then retests it from the other side, control has changed hands. The VWAP trading strategy guide covers this reclaim setup step by step.

Confluence. Two or three anchored VWAPs from different anchors landing near the same price (say, the swing-low VWAP and the weekly VWAP) make a stronger level than any one of them alone.

How to add an anchored VWAP in NinjaTrader 8

Option 1: NinjaTrader’s VWAP drawing tool (Order Flow+)

Since version 8.1.3, NinjaTrader has an Order Flow+ VWAP drawing tool. With Order Flow+ enabled, right-click the chart, choose the VWAP drawing tool and draw it over the bars you want. It plots the VWAP with standard deviation lines. It needs an Order Flow+ license, which NinjaTrader lists with its Lifetime plan. More on that in Does NinjaTrader have VWAP?

Option 2: VWAP Studio (no Order Flow+ needed)

VWAP Studio puts every VWAP you want behind one VWAP button on the chart toolbar.

  1. Add aiVWAP to the chart (Ctrl + I, then add aiVWAP).
  2. Click VWAP on the chart toolbar and choose Anchor VWAP on next click.
  3. Click the bar you want to anchor to. The line starts there.
  4. To move it later, open the line in the same menu and choose Move anchor on next click. Lock anchor stops it from being moved by accident.

Two details that save time on futures:

  • Anchors follow the instrument. An anchor placed on one NQ chart can show on every NQ chart, and micro and mini contracts share them, so an anchor placed on MNQ shows on NQ too (same for MES/ES, MGC/GC, MCL/CL and others).
  • Each line can carry its own bands (1, 1 and 2, or 1, 2 and 3 sigma), its own color and a name that shows on the price axis.

All of this is free with an Affordable Indicators account: up to eight added lines, including anchors you would otherwise place by hand every day. Swing anchors follow the latest swing highs and lows, and automatic anchors sit on the high and low of the day, the overnight high and low, the prior day’s high and low, and the session’s highest-volume bar. You also get RTH, overnight, London, Tokyo and custom-time VWAPs, and alerts when price touches or closes through any line. VWAP Studio Pro adds entry signals on top: pullback, reclaim and band fade arrows with stops and targets.

Does an anchored VWAP repaint?

An anchored VWAP from a fixed bar does not. Once the anchor is set, every past value is final.

Swing-anchored lines are the exception, on any platform. A swing low is only a swing low once enough bars have printed after it, so the line has to appear a few bars after the pivot and then draw back to it. VWAP Studio’s swing lines do exactly that, and it is the only part of the indicator that redraws history.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between VWAP and anchored VWAP?

Only the starting point. A session VWAP resets at the start of every session. An anchored VWAP starts at a bar you choose and keeps going until you remove it.

What is the best anchor for day trading?

For index futures, the regular session open and the most recent significant swing are the two most used. Add the overnight high or low on days that open near them.

How many anchored VWAPs should I use?

Two or three. More than that and every price is near some line, which means none of them tell you anything.

Can I anchor a VWAP on a Renko or range chart?

Yes. On bar types that take a while to form, set VWAP Studio’s resolution to Tick so each trade is counted at its real price rather than the bar’s average.
