Cloud-Based Trade Copier vs a Copier Inside NinjaTrader
Short answer: a cloud-based trade copier runs on the provider’s servers and connects to your accounts over the internet. A copier like Duplicate Account Actions runs on your own Windows PC inside NinjaTrader Desktop. Neither is better for everyone; the choice comes down to where you want it to run, how you want to pay, and what your prop firm allows.
How a cloud-based copier works
Tradesyncer is the cloud copier prop firms name most often. Its own site describes it as a cloud-based trading platform that brings your accounts together, says no VPS is needed, and lists web, Windows, macOS, iOS and Android access. It lists connections including Tradovate, Rithmic, NinjaTrader, TradingView and ProjectX. Plans are billed monthly (annual billing is also offered) and differ by connection and account limits; check the current plans on its site. My Funded Futures’ help center names Tradesyncer as its preferred cloud copier and says external copy trading tools can also be used.
How a copier inside NinjaTrader works
Duplicate Account Actions is a NinjaTrader add-on. It runs on Windows inside NinjaTrader Desktop and copies across the accounts you have connected there, including Tradovate and Rithmic prop firm accounts, each follower at its own size. It is a one-time license rather than a subscription. The trade-off is that it needs NinjaTrader Desktop running on a connected Windows PC.
Side by side
- Where it runs: a cloud copier on the provider’s servers; a NinjaTrader copier on your PC.
- Your PC: a cloud copier does not need your platform open to keep copying; a NinjaTrader copier does.
- Cost model: cloud copiers such as Tradesyncer bill monthly or annually; Duplicate Account Actions is a one-time license.
- Platforms: a cloud copier can span several platforms; a NinjaTrader copier works with what NinjaTrader connects to.
- Control: a NinjaTrader copier sits next to your own charts and orders; a cloud copier is managed in its own web or app dashboard.
Check your prop firm first
Rules differ by firm, and a cloud copier means orders are sent from a provider’s servers. Topstep’s API access article, for example, says trading must originate from your personal device and that remote servers are prohibited for order flow, so ask Topstep before using any outside service there (see TopstepX trade copier). Firms also ban hedging across accounts and copying other people’s trades. Our prop firm trade copier rules guide covers the common ones. Whichever copier you pick, read the firm’s current policy first.
