TopstepX Trade Copier: Built-In Copier, Rules and Limits
Short answer: TopstepX has a trade copier built in, and it is the supported way to copy trades between your Topstep accounts. Topstep says it works on Trading Combine and Express Funded Account accounts only, not on Live Funded Accounts. This page summarizes Topstep’s own help center, not third-party guides.
What Topstep says about the TopstepX trade copier
Topstep’s help center article on TopstepX has a Trade Copier section. In short:
- Which accounts: Topstep states that trade copying is only available for Trading Combine and Express Funded Account accounts. Live Funded Accounts cannot use it.
- Setup: go to Settings, then Copy Trading, pick the Lead account, check the Follower accounts, and click Save Changes. To turn it off, click Clear and save.
- The Lead has the lowest size: the Lead account must have the lowest Maximum Position Size of all accounts in the group.
- Scaling plan: if Lead and Follower accounts are on different Scaling Plan tiers, the copier may disconnect at the start of a new trading day, so Topstep says to check your settings each session.
- Follower limits: followers support only a Personal Daily Loss Limit and/or a Personal Daily Profit Target. Trade Limits, Symbol Blocks and Contract Limits are not available on followers.
- You cannot trade a linked follower directly. Remove it in Settings first.
- Turning the copier off mid-trade immediately flattens all follower accounts.
- A payout request automatically unlinks the follower accounts.
- Daily loss: if the Lead hits its Daily Loss Limit or is auto-liquidated, the followers are flattened too and copying pauses while the Lead is locked out.
- Fills can differ: Topstep notes fill prices and timing can differ slightly because of slippage and liquidity.
The hedging rule applies to copiers too
Topstep’s “Understanding Hedging” article (dated July 27, 2026) prohibits cross-account hedging, which it defines as simultaneously going long and short the same or correlated instrument across multiple accounts. Opposing positions are prohibited even if brief or unintentional. For copy trading it says the system accounts for technical glitches, but you remain responsible for all activity across your accounts. Keep every follower on the same side as the Lead and watch your copy tool so it never creates opposing positions. A first attempt gets a warning and a short window to un-hedge; repeated attempts bring immediate liquidation, and numerous warnings can close the account.
What about NinjaTrader and third-party copiers?
The TopstepX article does not mention NinjaTrader. Topstep’s help center names TopstepX as its trading platform, and it says TopstepX cannot connect to external platforms like TradingView. We cover what that means for NinjaTrader in our Topstep and NinjaTrader copier guide and Does Topstep work with NinjaTrader?. Topstep also sells separate API access to TopstepX for outside tools. Its API article says trading must originate from your personal device, that VPNs and remote servers are prohibited for order flow, that outside tools are used at your own risk, and that Topstep gives no support for them. Read that article, and ask Topstep, before you connect any outside copier to a Topstep account.
Where a NinjaTrader copier fits
A copier that runs inside NinjaTrader Desktop copies the accounts connected to NinjaTrader. Topstep accounts on TopstepX are not among them, so for those, use the built-in copier above. If you also run accounts at other prop firms that connect to NinjaTrader through Tradovate or Rithmic, Duplicate Account Actions copies across those at their own sizes, on a one-time license.
