Topstep and NinjaTrader 8: Why It No Longer Connects

Topstep no longer issues credentials that reach NinjaTrader Desktop. Their own help centre states it in one line — “TopstepX is the only available trading platform” — and the Rithmic, Tradovate and NinjaTrader setup articles that used to sit beside it have been taken down. If you have just funded a Topstep account and you are hunting the dashboard for a Rithmic username, there is not one to find. The part worth reading on is the exception: accounts that were already running on something other than TopstepX are a different case, and Topstep’s own rules still quietly account for them.
What Topstep runs now
TopstepX is a browser platform, developed and owned by ProjectX Trading LLC. It is where the account lives, where orders go, and where the risk rules are enforced. Topstep’s help centre describes it as reached through a web browser and notes there is currently not even a mobile app. There is no NinjaTrader adapter for it.
The evidence that the old route has closed sits on Topstep’s own site rather than in anyone’s opinion of it. Search their help centre for NinjaTrader, for Rithmic, or for Tradovate, and each one returns “We couldn’t find any articles”. The article that used to explain the R|Trader plug-in for market data now returns a 404, and so do the other third-party connection guides that once sat alongside it. The only third-party platform Topstep still documents is Quantower, and that one connects on TopstepX credentials over the ProjectX feed rather than over Rithmic. Their instructions put it plainly: “No API access required — just your TopstepX credentials.”
We could not find a dated cut-over notice anywhere on Topstep’s own site, so we will not put a date on the change. What we can report is what their current pages say, and their current pages name exactly one platform.
If you already have a Topstep account on Rithmic
Topstep’s Express Funded Account rules page, last updated in June 2025, still carries the line “Accounts trading on platforms other than TopstepX are also subject to a Daily Loss Limit as outlined below.” The Rithmic side has moved on since then, though. Rithmic’s public server listed a TopstepTrader system on 6 August 2026, and on 24 September 2026 it rejects that system name as invalid. A connection that uses the TopstepTrader System entry is therefore unlikely to log in any more, even though NinjaTrader still shows that entry in its System list.
That changes how you should treat it.
- If your Rithmic connection is already configured in NinjaTrader and working, leave it alone. Do not delete it to tidy up, because you cannot rebuild it from anything Topstep currently publishes.
- If it stops working, Topstep support is now the only authority on whether your particular account is still entitled and which System entry applies to it. Ask them, and do not take a System or Gateway value off a third-party blog. The values still circulating were lifted from the articles Topstep has since removed, and none of them can be checked against a live Topstep page.
- Check the daily loss limit that applies to you against Topstep’s current rules page rather than from memory. It is set out separately for accounts on platforms other than TopstepX.
- Anything you buy from Topstep today comes with TopstepX and nothing else — their onboarding has no platform choice in it at all. What a reset does to an existing legacy account is not something Topstep documents either way, so ask support before you spend money on one.
What people try that does not work
- Hunting the dashboard for Rithmic credentials. New accounts are not issued any. There is no hidden menu and no support ticket that produces them, because the entitlement itself is what has gone.
- Typing TopstepX credentials into NinjaTrader’s Rithmic connection. These are separate systems. TopstepX credentials authenticate against ProjectX, which is not a Rithmic gateway, so the login fails however carefully it is typed. This one is not the usual trailing-space problem described in Rithmic logon failed.
- Buying TopstepX API access and expecting NinjaTrader to use it. That API is REST and WebSocket, aimed at people writing their own code. NinjaTrader Desktop does not speak it. Topstep also state plainly that they and ProjectX “don’t affiliate with, endorse, or support any external vendor or platform offering API integrations”, so any bridge you find is unsupported by the firm holding your account.
- Following an older walkthrough to the letter. Guides describing a Topstep System entry, an R|Trader plug-in step, or a Tradovate account type were accurate once. They describe a route Topstep has withdrawn, and no amount of care with the steps brings it back.
- Assuming the fault is at your end. On a legacy account it might be. A missing Configure option is covered in why Configure is missing, and an empty account list in no accounts were found. On a new account, nothing in NinjaTrader is misconfigured. There is simply nothing to connect it to.
Topstep and NinjaTrader: questions we get
Is there any route at all from a new Topstep account to NinjaTrader 8?
No. Not over Rithmic, not over Tradovate, and not through the API. Quantower is the nearest thing to a desktop platform Topstep still documents, and it is a platform in its own right rather than a way into NinjaTrader. If NinjaTrader Desktop is the thing you are unwilling to give up, that is a reason to choose the firm before you choose the account size. Our connection guides for every prop firm cover the firms that still issue Rithmic or Tradovate credentials.
My legacy Topstep account is on Rithmic. Can I run it next to another prop firm?
Not out of the box. NinjaTrader holds one Rithmic connection at a time, so it refuses a second Rithmic firm’s connection while the first one is running. Unlimited Prop Firm Connections lets you keep several connected at the same time. A Rithmic session cap still applies per login on top of that, and no add-on can raise it.
If what you want is one order reaching several accounts, that is a separate job and belongs to the trade copier. Worth being clear about the limit, though: a copier can only reach accounts NinjaTrader itself can see, and a TopstepX account is not one of them.
Does searching for “topstepx rithmic” lead anywhere?
It is a common search and it comes from a real memory, which is why it persists. TopstepX and Rithmic are separate things that Topstep used at different times, and putting the two words together does not describe a product. There is no TopstepX entry inside NinjaTrader’s connection list waiting to be found. If a page promises one, check what it is actually describing against Topstep’s help centre before you act on it.
