Connect Top One Futures to NinjaTrader 8 (Tradovate)

Top One Futures runs on Tradovate, and the NinjaTrader route is the Tradovate one. There is no Rithmic option here, so there is no System dropdown to hunt for — any instructions telling you to pick one belong to a different feed. The step that catches nearly everyone sits earlier than NinjaTrader: Top One’s own instructions say you must log into Tradovate and sign the Market Data Subscriber Certification first, and you must answer it as Non-Professional. Their wording on getting that wrong is blunt — it prevents access to real-time data and incurs a substantial monthly data fee billed to you.
What you need before you start
- Your Top One Futures dashboard login. That is not what NinjaTrader wants, but it is where the credentials NinjaTrader does want are kept.
- The Tradovate credentials Top One issued for the account, found in the dashboard under Accounts, then your account, then Credentials.
- The Market Data Subscriber Certification signed as Non-Professional. It is a one-off, and until it is done real-time data does not flow.
- A Windows machine. Top One state plainly that macOS is not supported for NinjaTrader Desktop, whatever other platforms they offer on Mac.
Connecting Top One Futures to NinjaTrader
Sign the Market Data Subscriber Certification first
Log into Tradovate on the web before you touch NinjaTrader. On first login you are shown a uniform subscriber agreement asking you to declare your status. Choose Non-Professional.
This is the single most expensive thing to get wrong at this firm, and it is not obvious that it matters, because the platform still opens either way. It is the charts that stay empty. Top One call it mandatory rather than a formality, so treat it as a gate.
Find your Tradovate credentials in the dashboard
In your Top One Futures dashboard, open Accounts from the left menu, pick the account you want — if you have several, the filters at the top narrow the list — and click Credentials.
The panel shows a login, a username, a password and the platform. Top One’s own connection article tells you to enter the username and password, so that is the pair to carry across. Their documentation does not say what the separate Login field is for, so if the username is rejected, ask Top One support which of the two identifiers NinjaTrader wants rather than guessing. Either way, these are not the details you use to sign into the Top One website.
Pick the prop Simulation trading mode
After the certification you land on a trading modes screen. The one you want is the prop simulation mode — Top One’s own articles label it slightly differently in different places, so look for the entry that pairs your platform name with Simulation rather than matching a string exactly. Do not pick Market Replay unless you specifically want to practise on historical data.
Simulation is the correct choice on this route whether you are on an evaluation or on a funded account. It is not a demo you graduate out of. Live is for a retail Tradovate brokerage account, which is a different thing entirely.
Install NinjaTrader Desktop (NinjaTrader 8)
Top One route you through NinjaTrader’s own account site at account.ninjatrader.com, where you sign in with the same Tradovate credentials and download NinjaTrader Desktop from there. Because Tradovate and NinjaTrader accounts are unified, that credential works on both sides — which is why this route has no separate NinjaTrader signup.
The web platform will not do the job if you want desktop indicators or ATM strategies. You want NinjaTrader Desktop.
Log in and check the connection
Open NinjaTrader Desktop and enter the same Tradovate username and password. Type them rather than pasting; a trailing space picked up from the credentials panel is a very common cause of a failed logon. Your accounts should appear in the Accounts panel.
If nothing shows, open the Connections tab and select Simulation, then give it a few seconds. Top One tell you to look for a green status light beside the connection name and in the lower-left of the Control Center.
If you use Tradovate credentials other than the ones Top One issued
All of your Tradovate and NinjaTrader-based Top One accounts sit under the same login, so you only do this once — a new account later does not mean a new setup. Top One’s instruction is that if you log in with a different set of Tradovate credentials from the ones they assigned, say a personal account or another firm’s, the process changes: switch on Multi-Provider and connect through the My NinjaTrader entry in the Connections tab instead.
Multi-Provider lives in Tools, then Settings, then General. Tick it, apply, and restart NinjaTrader — without a restart the Configure option does not appear under Connections at all. On current builds you add it by double-clicking NinjaTrader in the Available list, which creates a connection named My NinjaTrader by default. There is no separate Tradovate entry to pick instead.
If it will not connect
- Connected, but the charts are empty. On this firm, suspect the subscriber certification before anything else — either unsigned, or answered as Professional. Everything else looks normal when this is the problem. More causes in connected but no data.
- Logon failed. Usually a trailing space copied out of the credentials panel, or the dashboard login used by mistake in place of the Tradovate one.
- Connected, but no accounts. Select Simulation in the Connections tab and wait for the green light. If it is still empty, the account status at Top One is the more likely cause than anything in NinjaTrader. See no accounts were found.
- No Configure option. Multi-Provider is off, or you have not restarted since ticking it. See why Configure is missing.
- You are asked for video proof. Top One require clear video proof, such as a screen recording, before they will escalate a platform fault, so capture it while the problem is on screen rather than afterwards.
Top One Futures and NinjaTrader: questions we get
Can I run Top One Futures next to another prop firm?
Yes. Tradovate does not cap how many connections you hold, so nothing here needs an add-on to sit alongside another firm. That one-at-a-time restriction people run into is a Rithmic-route problem in NinjaTrader, and it does not apply to you on this feed.
If what you actually want is one order reaching several accounts at once, that is a separate job from having the connections open, and it is what the trade copier handles.
Is my dashboard login the same as my connection login?
No, and this is the most common setup mistake we see. The Top One website login gets you to the dashboard; NinjaTrader needs the Tradovate username and password shown under Accounts, then Credentials. They are separate sets of details.
Do my stops still work if I close NinjaTrader?
Partly, and the distinction matters. Top One are explicit that ATM strategies do not run on a server at all — they run only on your local NinjaTrader Desktop. The stop loss and take profit an ATM has already placed are resting on the server, so those stay active through a disconnection, but trailing stops, breakeven triggers and any other automated adjustment stop the moment NinjaTrader Desktop goes offline or the machine sleeps.
The sharper edge is a resting limit order. If it fills while you are disconnected, the ATM never activates, so no stop and no target are submitted at all and the position sits unprotected. Top One’s own advice is to check the Tradovate web platform and confirm your stop and target are actually showing there.
