NinjaTrader: “Historical data failed to start”
Charts will not load their history. The connection reports itself healthy, orders would route, and the data side has not come up.
This is a market data problem wearing the costume of a connection problem, which is why restarting the connection often appears to do nothing.
The usual sequence
- Disconnect fully. Not a reconnect, a disconnect.
- Wait several seconds. The provider needs to release the session and this is faster than it feels.
- Reconnect.
That alone clears a good proportion of cases, because the data session has stalled while the order session stayed up.
If it comes back
Check market data settings in RTrader Pro. The documented fix for persistent data-side failures is to turn off Market Data in RTrader Pro and to untick plug-in mode in NinjaTrader. Running both applications with market data enabled makes them compete for the same entitlement.
Check your data agreements. Unsigned agreements in the provider portal will let you connect and refuse to furnish data.

Why one status light is not enough
This error exists because the order session and the market data feed are two different things that fail independently. A single connection indicator cannot show that, which is why Unlimited Prop Firm Connections tracks two lights per connection. A data-side failure then reads as a data-side failure, rather than as a connection insisting it is fine.
Why it matters more than it looks
A failure to load history is loud and obvious. The same underlying fault has a quiet version, where the connection comes up, history loads, and live ticks stop arriving some time later without any message at all. That failure mode is more dangerous because nothing on screen changes, and it is covered separately in connected but no data.
