NinjaTrader: “Unable to submit order — no handle affected”

An order comes back rejected with wording about no handle affected. The order itself was fine. The connection underneath it is in a state the platform cannot use.

The immediate fix

  1. Control Center, Connections, disconnect from the connection you are trading.
  2. Wait several seconds rather than reconnecting straight away.
  3. Reconnect.

The wait matters. Reconnecting instantly often reattaches to the same stale session and reproduces the problem, which is why people report the fix as unreliable when they have simply been too quick.

Check your position first

Before you cycle anything, check what you are actually holding. Disconnecting does not close positions, and the position stays live at your broker regardless of what your platform is attached to. But an order that failed to submit means your intended position and your actual position may not match, and that is worth establishing before you start changing connection state.

If you were entering, you are probably flat. If you were exiting, you are probably still in. Confirm rather than assume.

If it recurs

A connection that goes into this state repeatedly is usually one that has been up for a long time, or one on an unstable link. Two things help.

Restart NinjaTrader daily rather than leaving it running for weeks. Traders running on a VPS generally schedule this, because a platform that has been up since last Tuesday accumulates exactly this kind of fault.

Use a wired connection. Wi-Fi is the most common source of the brief interruptions that leave a session half-alive.

Making the recovery less disruptive

Two things help when this lands mid-session. Unlimited Prop Firm Connections lets you cycle a connection without going through the Control Center, and it asks before disconnecting one that is holding a live position, which is the check worth making anyway. Its drop history also records what you were holding at the time, so the question of what you were in when the order failed has an answer rather than a guess.

A similar message about a zero limit price has the same cause and the same fix. Both are the connection rather than the order.
