Connecting Apteros Trading to NinjaTrader 8 (Rithmic)

Apteros Trading documents NinjaTrader Desktop under its Tradovate connection, and it does not name NinjaTrader among the platforms it lists as compatible with its Rithmic connection. The firm publishes no NinjaTrader-plus-Rithmic instructions anywhere on its site. What it does publish is the mechanics: Apteros issues two separate sets of platform credentials, both from the Platform Credentials dropdown in the upper right of your Apteros dashboard, and one of those sets is a Rithmic username and password. Rithmic credentials log into the Rithmic network, and on the NinjaTrader Desktop side that network is reached through the stock Rithmic for NinjaTrader Brokerage connection in the Control Center. Before you build anything around that, ask Apteros what you are permitted to run on your account.
The thing that trips people up next is order of operations. Apteros states that you must first download and install Rithmic Trader Pro and sign the market data agreements there; only after that do the credentials work anywhere else. Traders who skip straight to a third-party platform get a login rejection that reads like a bad password, and they spend an hour retyping a password that was correct all along.
The second trap is the System value. For evaluation credentials Apteros is explicit that the Rithmic System must be set to Rithmic Paper Trading, and the firm calls this “the number one step people miss.” That instruction is scoped to evaluation credentials only. More on the Live Desk further down, because there the firm publishes nothing and we are not going to invent it.
What Apteros issues and what it documents
Taken from the firm’s own help centre and its evaluation page, the picture looks like this.
- Rithmic connection — a Rithmic username and password issued by Apteros, with Rithmic Trader Pro free to use. The compatible platforms the firm names alongside it are Sierra Chart, Jigsaw, Bookmap, Quantower, EdgeProX, ATAS, MotiveWave and MultiCharts, “and more”. NinjaTrader is not on that list.
- Tradovate / NinjaTrader connection — a separate credential set, with three ways to use it: Tradovate in the browser, NinjaTrader Desktop, or TradingView. This is the only place Apteros mentions NinjaTrader.
- The integrations grid — the Platform Integrations block on the evaluation page groups NinjaTrader, Tradovate and TradingView as a single item, and lists Rithmic and Sierra Chart as separate ones, for the evaluation and the Live Desk alike. Read on its own that grid is easy to misread as NinjaTrader working over Rithmic; the help centre is the more specific source, and it keeps the two routes apart.
- Two environments, not one — the Trader Evaluation Program (T.E.P.) is simulated with real-time data. The Live Desk executes in actual futures markets under a separate written agreement. That distinction is why the documented System value belongs to one stage and not the other.
What you need before you start
- Your Apteros dashboard login, so you can open the Platform Credentials dropdown. Credentials are not emailed and are not on your order confirmation.
- The Rithmic set specifically — that dropdown carries Tradovate credentials too, and taking the wrong pair is an easy mistake to make and a confusing one to diagnose.
- Rithmic Trader Pro installed, with the market data agreements signed. Apteros treats this as a required first step, not an optional one.
- NinjaTrader Desktop installed and up to date.
- Clarity on which stage you are in — evaluation or Live Desk — and, if you hold both an intraday and a swing account, which one you mean to trade. Margin treatment differs between them.
- A quick word with Apteros support confirming what you may run on the account, given that the firm documents NinjaTrader under its Tradovate route.
Connecting Apteros Trading to NinjaTrader
1. Collect your Rithmic credentials
Log into the Apteros dashboard, open the Platform Credentials dropdown in the upper right, and take the Rithmic username and password — not the Tradovate pair. Paste them somewhere plain rather than retyping them later, and watch for a trailing space on the end of either field. Rithmic treats a stray space as part of the credential, and the rejection it produces looks identical to a genuinely wrong password.
2. Install Rithmic Trader Pro and sign the market data agreements
Download and install Rithmic Trader Pro, log in with the credentials from step one, and sign the market data agreements there. Apteros is direct about this: once you have done so, “your credentials will work on any compatible third party platform”. Market data is covered by the evaluation fee, so there is nothing extra to buy at this stage.
3. Turn on Multi-Provider in NinjaTrader
Open NinjaTrader 8 and go to Tools > Settings > General, then tick Multi-Provider and restart NinjaTrader. This matters because Connections > Configure does not appear in the Control Center until Multi-Provider is on and the platform has been restarted. Skipping the restart is the usual reason people report the menu missing.
4. Add the Rithmic for NinjaTrader Brokerage connection
In the Control Center go to Connections > Configure. In the Available list, choose Rithmic for NinjaTrader Brokerage — the stock entry NinjaTrader provides for Rithmic logins. Give the connection a name you will recognize later (something like “Apteros TEP”), then enter the Rithmic username and password from step one.
5. Set the System, then connect
Set System to Rithmic Paper Trading if you are on evaluation credentials. Apteros publishes that value for T.E.P. credentials and says it must be set “in both the upper and lower panes” of the Rithmic login screen; in NinjaTrader 8 the equivalent is the System field on the connection you are configuring. Save, then connect from Connections. A healthy connection shows green in the Control Center status bar and your account appears in the Accounts tab. If the account list is empty, the login has not fully completed — do not start placing orders against a half-connected session.
Questions we get about Apteros and Rithmic
My login is rejected immediately and the message tells me nothing
Work through three things in order. First, did you sign the market data agreements in Rithmic Trader Pro? Until that is done the credentials will not authenticate elsewhere. Second, is the System right for the credentials you hold? A mismatched System produces a rejection with no useful detail. Third, check for whitespace on the username or password. Our general Rithmic logon failed walkthrough covers the rest.
Configure is missing from my Connections menu
Multi-Provider is not enabled, or NinjaTrader has not been restarted since you enabled it. Both parts are needed. We have written that one up separately in Configure missing from the Connections menu.
Which System do I use once I reach the Live Desk?
We are not going to guess. Apteros publishes the Rithmic Paper Trading value only for evaluation credentials and explicitly scopes it to them, and the Live Desk executes in actual futures markets rather than a simulated environment. The firm does not publish a System or gateway value for that stage. Read what is shown against your Live Desk credentials in the dashboard and what is set out in your separate written agreement, and ask Apteros directly if it is not stated.
I have the wrong credentials in front of me — how do I tell?
The dashboard dropdown carries both sets. If you are being asked to log in through a browser, or the instructions you are following start with signing into Tradovate, you are on the Tradovate route, which is a different connection entirely. In NinjaTrader that route is added from a different entry in the Available list — the one named NinjaTrader rather than Tradovate — and it is not the setup described on this page.
Can I connect more than one Apteros account at the same time?
Apteros’s own FAQ puts the account limits at up to five evaluation accounts, and two on the Live Desk (one intraday, one swing). NinjaTrader Desktop runs one Rithmic connection at a time, although one connection can carry several accounts under the same login. Our add-on Unlimited Prop Firm Connections lets you connect and manage multiple Rithmic accounts at the same time, from one window, with per-connection monitoring, and it tells you which System entry your firm uses, or adds that entry to NinjaTrader’s System list when it is missing. If you are thinking about mirroring orders between your own accounts, read Apteros’s own copy-trading article and confirm with the firm what your account permits before you set anything up.
I set everything up and then did not trade for a while
Apteros’s terms state that an evaluation account must be actively and meaningfully traded every 30 days or it is suspended, with reactivation requiring a reset or a new account. Getting the connection working is not the same as keeping the account alive.
