NinjaTrader AI: Strategy Builder, MCP and AI-Written NinjaScript

NinjaTrader AI is not one product. In September 2026 NinjaTrader announced three AI capabilities: Nina, AI Strategy Builder and an MCP server for outside assistants. Its help guide also has an experimental backtest type called AI Generate. You can also draft NinjaScript in a general AI assistant such as ChatGPT or Claude, which is not a NinjaTrader tool. AI can draft the code, but you still check it, test it and decide whether it trades.
Checked November 6, 2026 against NinjaTrader’s own pages and docs. These tools are still rolling out, so check those pages before you rely on a detail. We wrote this guide. NinjaTrader did not write or review it, and Affordable Indicators is not affiliated with NinjaTrader.
This guide is for traders on NinjaTrader Desktop (NinjaTrader 8) who want to use AI for NinjaTrader indicators, strategies or signals. It covers what each tool does, how to write NinjaScript with AI, and how to test what you get. It does not rank AI models or say how any strategy will do. If you would rather hire a programmer, see our NinjaTrader programming page.
What “NinjaTrader AI” covers today
NinjaTrader’s September 9, 2026 press release announced the NinjaTrader Innovation Lab, with Nina, AI Strategy Builder and an MCP server as its first capabilities. Its AI page says you open a free account and get access as each capability rolls out, and it shows no dates. The status labels below are what NinjaTrader’s pages showed on November 6, 2026.
| Tool | Where it runs | What it does | Status shown |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nina | Account Dashboard | Gives feedback on your own account activity. NinjaTrader calls it informational and educational, and says its outputs may be incomplete, inaccurate or outdated | Live now on Account Dashboard |
| AI Strategy Builder | NinjaTrader Desktop | Turns a plain-English description into compiled NinjaScript, then backtests it | Beta |
| AI Generate | Strategy Analyzer | Searches indicator and candlestick combinations with a genetic algorithm | Experimental |
| MCP server | Your own AI client, connected to your account | Gives an outside assistant your account data and tools that can place orders | No label shown |
| General assistant | Outside NinjaTrader | You ask for a draft, paste it into the NinjaScript Editor and compile it yourself | Not a NinjaTrader tool |
NinjaTrader’s September 11, 2026 blog says Nina works from your own account data rather than the wider market, and that it does not recommend a trade or forecast an outcome. Neither that blog nor the AI page says Nina places orders.
NinjaTrader’s AI Strategy Builder (beta)
AI Strategy Builder is NinjaTrader’s plain-English strategy tool in NinjaTrader Desktop. Its help guide page calls it a phased beta, in English only, with more changes planned before a broader production release. The 8.1.9.0 release notes list it; on November 6 they still showed a placeholder instead of a release date, and 8.1.9.0 was not yet on NinjaTrader’s release notes index. The rollout is phased, so it may not be in your install. It is a separate product from our AI Trading System Builder.
- In the Control Center, open New › AI Strategy Builder.
- NinjaTrader checks your NinjaScript for compile errors as the window opens, and they must be resolved before it will generate a strategy. If that check stops you, see AI Strategy Builder blocked by NinjaScript errors.
- Describe your entries, exits and risk rules in plain English. The 8.1.9.0 notes say it recaps the strategy for your confirmation. It then generates NinjaScript and compiles it automatically.
- If it compiles, a backtest runs automatically in the same window.
- Select the ellipsis to open the annotated script, and read it.
- Keep going in the same chat to change conditions, filters, stops or targets. The strategy is regenerated and retested.
NinjaTrader’s guide and its September 22, 2026 blog add these points:
- Be specific. The blog says it builds the strategy you describe, which may differ from what you had in mind. It says to name entry and exit triggers, quantity, indicators and parameters, stop and target, and to avoid undefined terms such as “strong trend”.
- Unsupported items become placeholders. An indicator, library or external resource that is not available in NinjaTrader gets a placeholder in the code.
- Usage has limits. The guide describes hourly and daily token limits but gives no numbers.
- The output is a starting point. The guide says generated strategies are not final systems, and to review the code and validate results before live trading.
- Backtests are hypothetical. The blog says backtested results do not indicate future performance, and to backtest a first strategy in the sim environment before risking capital.
Not to be confused with the classic Strategy Builder. NinjaTrader’s older Strategy Builder, opened from New › Strategy Builder, uses no AI. You pick conditions and actions point and click, and it generates a NinjaScript strategy you can backtest in the Strategy Analyzer. Once you unlock its code to edit it in the NinjaScript Editor, you can no longer edit that strategy in the Strategy Builder.
For a side-by-side view of NinjaTrader’s AI Strategy Builder and our own tool, see NinjaTrader AI Strategy Builder vs AI Trading System Builder.
AI Generate: NinjaTrader’s experimental backtest type
AI Generate is a separate feature: a search, not a chat. You select AI Generate (Experimental) as the backtest type in the Strategy Analyzer settings panel. NinjaTrader’s AI Generate page says it can combine up to 73 default indicators, 25 candlestick patterns and single-series custom indicators. A genetic algorithm searches entry and exit combinations and ranks them by a criterion called Max Strength. After each generation, a Monte Carlo simulation finds a 95% confidence interval, which the page describes as a guard against over-fitting to historical data.
Press View in the optimization results and the generated strategy’s code opens in the NinjaScript Editor, where you can review, save and customize it. Treat it like any other AI draft. The search only looked at past data, and NinjaTrader’s help guide says to expect a strategy running in real time to produce different results from its backtest.
Using ChatGPT, Claude or another AI assistant for NinjaScript
A general assistant is the simplest kind of NinjaScript AI: you paste a rule into it and ask for code. Compiling and testing whatever comes back are up to you. NinjaTrader documents these options:
- Give it NinjaTrader’s docs. NinjaTrader’s documentation offers a Markdown version of any page (add
.mdto the URL), an index atllms.txt, and a read-only docs search server for AI clients atdocs.ninjatrader.com/_mcp/server. That server is separate from the account MCP server covered below. - Edit in Visual Studio if you prefer. The icon in the NinjaScript Editor toolbar opens the NinjaTrader.Custom project. NinjaTrader’s Visual Studio debugging page lists versions 2019 and 2022, and the 8.1.9.0 notes add 2026. The debugging page says to save edits without building or running from Visual Studio, ideally with the NinjaScript Editor open so changes compile automatically.
What AI-written NinjaScript has to get right
Any AI draft has to fit the same framework as code you write yourself. NinjaTrader’s docs describe NinjaScript as a C# framework that runs only in NinjaTrader Desktop, not in NinjaTrader Web. The Visual Studio debugging page says NinjaScript objects compile into one DLL, NinjaTrader.Custom.dll. The compile errors page says all files are compiled, not only the one you are on, and we find that one file with an error stops the whole build.
A draft that looks right may not compile, or it may compile and do something other than you meant. NinjaTrader’s NinjaScript debugging page says code can compile and run and still produce inaccurate results. NinjaTrader’s September 11 blog separates code that compiles inside the platform from code that only looks plausible. Check these points in any draft:
- Names that exist. A draft can use a convincing property or method name that NinjaTrader does not have. Look up anything you don’t recognize in NinjaTrader’s docs.
- The right state.
OnStateChangeruns each time the script enters a new State. The docs put default values inSetDefaults, extra data series inConfigure, and logic that needs Bars or Instruments inDataLoaded. - The right timing.
OnBarUpdateholds bar-based logic, andCalculatesets how often it runs:OnBarClose,OnEachTickorOnPriceChange. NinjaTrader’s Calculate page says historical bars run only at the close, whatever that setting says, and that TickReplay or a multi-time-frame script can provide intrabar data. - Enough bars.
Close[1]on the first bar refers to a bar that does not exist yet. The docs say that throws an exception to the Control Center Log tab, so checkCurrentBarfirst. - Order rules. In a strategy, NinjaTrader’s Internal Order Handling Rules can cause entry methods to be ignored. Violations go to the Log tab, and only the first one is reported.
A workflow from written rule to sim test
- Start from NinjaTrader’s own template. Open New › NinjaScript Editor from the Control Center, pick the + on the tab row and choose the object type. The wizard generates the minimum code to start. Generate exits the wizard, and you cannot return to it.
- Write the rule in plain English first. For example, as rule wording only and not a recommendation: “When the 9-period EMA crosses above the 21-period EMA on a closed bar, and ATR is above the value you choose, enter long at market.” Writing it out shows what is still undefined: here, the ATR period and value, the stop and the target.
- Give the assistant context. Paste the generated code, say which method you want filled, and use the prompts in the next section.
- Compile early. Add one piece at a time and press F5 in the NinjaScript Editor. Compile messages appear at the bottom of the editor, and a double-click opens the problem file. If the list names files you did not touch, see how to fix NinjaScript errors in NinjaTrader 8.
- Test on a sim account before live. Run it on the Sim101 account while market-hours data is streaming. NinjaTrader’s simulation page warns that fills outside market hours can land far from the last traded price.
To repeat a test on the same data, use the Playback connection. NinjaTrader’s Playback page says Playback101 orders process immediately, without Sim101’s simulated latency, so strategy developers get reproducible runs.
When a script compiles but does the wrong thing, NinjaTrader documents these tools:
- Print.
Print()writes to the NinjaScript Output window. The debugging page suggests comparing values with the Data Box and printing the value at each step of a complex calculation. - TraceOrders. In a strategy,
TraceOrderssends a message for each order method call to the same window, including when a method is ignored and why. - Log.
Log()writes to the Log tab and the log file, not the Output window. - Breakpoints. Right-click in the NinjaScript Editor to turn on Debug Mode, then compile. In Visual Studio, choose Debug › Attach to Process, select NinjaTrader with Attach to set to Managed code, and set your breakpoints. The debug DLL can slow NinjaTrader down, so turn it off and recompile when you finish.
How to prompt an AI assistant for NinjaScript
These patterns are our suggestions, and they do not replace the compile and the sim test.
- State the platform. For example:
I am writing NinjaScript for NinjaTrader 8. Use only properties and methods in NinjaTrader's docs. If you are not sure one exists, say so. - Paste the method stub. Ask for one method, not a whole file. For example:
Here is my OnBarUpdate() method. Add code that draws a horizontal line at the previous bar's close. Check CurrentBar first. You can compare the answer with NinjaTrader’sDraw.HorizontalLine()page. - Ask for an explanation. Ask what each section does and which NinjaTrader members it uses, then look up any you don’t recognize.
- Feed compiler messages back. Paste the exact message with the code it points to, and ask what it means before you ask for a fix. Run-time exceptions go to the Control Center Log tab by default, so copy them from there.
NinjaTrader’s MCP server: connecting ChatGPT or Claude to your account
The MCP server is about your account, not your code, and you don’t need it to write NinjaScript. NinjaTrader’s MCP docs describe a remote server you authorize with your NinjaTrader credentials through OAuth. They say it is available only to Tradovate and NinjaTrader users. They name Claude Code, Claude Desktop, ChatGPT, Codex and Cursor as clients, and list tools for placing, modifying and canceling orders, closing positions and updating risk settings.
- Approval. The AI page says actions wait for your approval. The MCP docs say most clients pause on those tools, but that depending on client configuration the agent may place trades without asking you to confirm each one. Check your client’s settings.
- Risk. The AI page says you assume all risk for orders your agent places and for the provider’s use of your data, and that agentic trading carries substantial risk. The docs’ safety page says every agent order must clear the same pre-trade checks as orders you place yourself.
- Data. Once you authorize a provider, the AI page says your data leaves NinjaTrader’s security environment under that provider’s terms, and that NinjaTrader does not control, supervise or audit those providers. The safety page says clients receive account identifiers, positions, balances, orders and transaction history.
- Testing. The safety page says to start on Demo, set your client to require approval, and watch your account in the trader app. A Demo connection can’t reach Live, and removing the server from your client stops the agent from acting.
These pages don’t say how the MCP server applies to prop or funded accounts, and we are not suggesting you connect one. Read your firm’s own rules first.
What our AI Trading System Builder adds
AI Trading System Builder, previously called Signal Entry Orders and Signal Studio, is a module for NinjaTrader traders that runs in our Enhanced Chart Trader. It is ours, not NinjaTrader’s, and it is a different product from NinjaTrader’s AI Strategy Builder. Where AI Strategy Builder, AI Generate and a general assistant give you code to read and test, this one builds an entry signal: you describe it in plain English inside Enhanced Chart Trader, and the built-in AI lays it out for you to review. It does not suggest setups, entries or markets.
- The AI is built in. You need no AI account, API key or separate bill. It runs on our server, with fair use of up to 25 AI builds per day per customer.
- Nothing to compile. The signal lives inside Enhanced Chart Trader, so it adds no code to your NinjaScript and is not part of NinjaTrader’s compile.
- You can build without AI. A visual builder needs no code, and there are ten starter templates, such as an EMA 9/21 cross or a swing pullback.
- Arrows are not trades. Adding a signal to your chart only shows arrows on the bars already loaded. They are drawings on past bars, not trades or results.
- Nothing trades until you arm it. Click Signal to arm it and click it again to stop. Entries use the Account, Quantity and ATM Strategy on your panel, so choose Sim101 as the account when you first try it.
- A stop and target come only from an ATM strategy. With ATM Strategy set to None, the entry goes to your broker with no stop or target. Check that your ATM template defines a stop before you arm a signal. See how to set up a NinjaTrader bracket order.
- It also reads indicator plots. A signal can read any indicator plot on the same chart, including BloodHound and our signal indicators.
The purchase also includes Basic Chart Trader Tools. If you own Signal Entry Orders or Professional Chart Trader Tools, you already have it: update Enhanced Chart Trader from Downloads in your Members Area, then pick Build With AI from the Signal type list in Signal Entry. Frequently asked questions
Does NinjaTrader have AI?
Yes. On November 6, 2026, NinjaTrader’s AI page showed Nina as live on the Account Dashboard, AI Strategy Builder as a beta in NinjaTrader Desktop, and an MCP server for connecting outside assistants. Its help guide also has AI Generate, an experimental backtest type.
What is the AI Strategy Builder in NinjaTrader?
It is NinjaTrader’s plain-English strategy tool in NinjaTrader Desktop, opened from New › AI Strategy Builder. You describe the rules, and it generates and compiles NinjaScript, then runs a backtest. NinjaTrader’s help guide calls it a phased beta in English only, and it is a different product from our AI Trading System Builder.
What is the difference between NinjaTrader’s Strategy Builder and AI Strategy Builder?
The classic Strategy Builder is point and click with no AI: you choose conditions and actions from menus, and it generates a NinjaScript strategy. AI Strategy Builder takes a plain-English description instead and writes the NinjaScript for you. Both produce a NinjaScript strategy you can backtest in the Strategy Analyzer.
Can I use ChatGPT with NinjaTrader?
As an account connection, yes: NinjaTrader’s MCP docs, read November 6, 2026, name ChatGPT among the clients that can connect, and that covers account data and orders, not code. To draft NinjaScript, you can ask a general assistant, or use NinjaTrader’s AI Strategy Builder, which generates and compiles it for you. Whether the result does what you meant is yours to check, in the code and then on a sim account.
What is the NinjaTrader MCP server?
It is a remote server that lets an AI client you already use, such as Claude Desktop, Claude Code or ChatGPT, read your NinjaTrader or Tradovate account and use tools that can place orders, after you authorize it through OAuth. NinjaTrader’s safety page says to start on Demo and set your client to require approval. It does not write NinjaScript for you.
Can AI build trading indicators for NinjaTrader?
AI can draft one. An AI-drafted indicator is NinjaScript like any other indicator, so you compile the draft in the NinjaScript Editor and check its values, for example with Print() and the Data Box. NinjaTrader’s AI Strategy Builder pages describe building strategies, not indicators.
Do I need to know NinjaScript to use AI in NinjaTrader?
NinjaTrader’s September 22, 2026 blog says AI Strategy Builder does not require NinjaScript knowledge, but it calls reviewing the annotated script the step most worth not skipping. We would go further for any AI-written code: knowing enough NinjaScript to read it is how you confirm it does what you asked.
Do I need to test AI-written NinjaScript before trading it live?
Yes, and that testing is your job. NinjaTrader’s help guide says to review the code and validate results before live trading, and its blog says to backtest a first strategy in the sim environment before risking capital. A clean compile doesn’t tell you how the script will behave in real time.
Can I build a NinjaTrader signal with AI without writing code?
Yes. Our AI Trading System Builder lets you describe an entry in plain English inside Enhanced Chart Trader and review the draft, and nothing trades until you arm it. NinjaTrader’s AI Strategy Builder also asks for no code, but what it produces is a NinjaScript strategy.
Next: if your rule is growing into a full strategy, read our guide to NinjaTrader automated trading, and keep learning enough NinjaScript to check whatever these tools give you.
