NinjaTrader Market Data Delayed: How to Clear the Yellow Clock

A small yellow clock marked Delayed sits in the top right corner of the chart, and the Log tab in the Control Center says an instrument with delayed data has been detected. The prices on that chart are minutes behind the real market.

That matters more than it looks. An order priced off a delayed chart can land far from the live bid and ask, and anything that watches the last price, from a trailing stop to a daily loss limit, is reacting to numbers that are already old.

Find the connection that is delayed first

NinjaTrader marks the whole instrument as delayed the moment any one of your connections reports delayed data for it. It does not matter which connection your account trades through. Run a prop firm connection next to a personal NinjaTrader or Tradovate login, and the personal login can put every MNQ chart on delay while the prop firm connection is receiving live prices perfectly well.

That is not a rare case. In the customer diagnostics we have reviewed, about half of the delayed-data cases had another connection receiving live prices for the same contract. It is also why the standard advice, sign your prop firm’s data agreement, so often changes nothing. Work out which connection it is before you change anything:

  • List what is connected. Open the Connections menu in the Control Center and note every connection that is running, not only the one your account is on.
  • Look for one with no accounts. The Accounts tab shows the connection each account belongs to. A connected login that owns no accounts, very often the default My NinjaTrader connection signed in with a personal username, is the usual suspect.
  • Read the timing in the Log tab. The “Instrument with delayed data has been detected” line appears a few seconds after the responsible connection finishes connecting.

On a Tradovate connection you can confirm it outright. Open the Documents\NinjaTrader 8\trace folder, open the newest trace file, and search for mode='Delayed'. Each matching line names the connection in parentheses, right after the timestamp.

If it is a connection you do not trade through

Switch it off. There is nothing to repair on a connection you are not using.

  1. Disconnect it from the Connections menu.
  2. Open Connections, then Configure, select that connection and untick Connect on start up, so it does not come back the next time NinjaTrader opens. If Configure is not on the Connections menu, turn on Multi-provider first: Tools > Settings > General, tick Multi-provider, click OK, then close NinjaTrader and open it again (why Configure is missing).
  3. When you are flat, restart NinjaTrader.

Do not skip the restart. The delayed flag can stay on an instrument after the connection that caused it has gone, so disconnecting alone often leaves the clock on the chart.

If it is a Tradovate connection, including My NinjaTrader

NinjaTrader’s own brokerage runs on Tradovate, and so does every prop firm that issues Tradovate logins. Delayed data on one of these connections almost always means the login behind it has not accepted the exchange market data agreement.

  1. Go to trader.tradovate.com and sign in with that connection’s own username and password. On a prop firm account, that is the login the firm sent you, not a personal Tradovate account.
  2. Accept the market data agreement it shows you. Most retail traders qualify as Non-Professional.
  3. When you are flat, restart NinjaTrader. The agreement does not reach a session that is already running.

On your own NinjaTrader or Tradovate account, rather than a prop firm account, delayed data can also mean there is no live data subscription on it at all. Check the market data section of your account dashboard.

Still delayed after all of that? On a prop firm or evaluation account only the firm can switch market data on, so their support is the next stop. The Tradovate connection guide covers the rest of the setup.

If it is a Rithmic connection

Rithmic connections are rarely the source of delayed prices. An unsigned Rithmic agreement usually looks like connected but no data instead. The fix is the same either way: sign in once with R|Trader Pro using that connection’s username and password, choose your firm’s system and the Chicago Area gateway, accept the market data agreements as Non-Professional, close R|Trader Pro, then restart NinjaTrader. The Rithmic connection guide walks through the screens.

What our tools do about it

Enhanced Chart Trader refuses new entries while NinjaTrader reports the chart’s instrument as delayed and puts a warning on the chart, so a click on a stale price cannot turn into a fill far from the market. It blocks entries only: you can still move stops and targets and flatten the position.

The Accounts Dashboard warns when an instrument your copier is trading goes delayed. Auto Liquidate, Daily Goal, Daily Loss and trailing stops all read the last price, so on delayed data they are working from old numbers.

If the chart is not delayed but orders are refused anyway, see Real-time market data required to trade and Instruments not subscribed for real-time data.
