NinjaTrader Freezing or Not Responding? How to Find and Fix the Cause

When NinjaTrader 8 freezes or stops responding, the moment it happens is your best clue: at startup, while charts load data, in a fast market, during Playback, or when you close it. Find the section that matches, work through its steps in order, and you can usually narrow it down to one workspace, one setting, or one add-on. If you are in a live trade right now, manage the position at your broker first (see the next section).

Menu names below are for NinjaTrader 8.1.x.x (checked against NinjaTrader’s help guide, October 2026). Before 8.1.5, Tools › Settings was called Tools › Options.

If it freezes while you are in a trade

Stay calm. Your position and any orders your broker has already accepted, such as a working stop and target, are held by the broker, not by the frozen NinjaTrader window.

  1. Log in to your broker’s or prop firm’s web platform or mobile app, or call their trade desk, and manage the position there.
  2. Check that your stop actually exists at the broker. Anything NinjaTrader handles on your own PC cannot act while it is frozen. NinjaTrader’s help guide notes that Simulated Stop orders are held locally and are subject to computer crashes.
  3. Once the position is handled, close NinjaTrader (in Task Manager if it will not close), restart it, and connect.
  4. Compare the Positions and Orders tabs in the Control Center with your broker’s platform before you place another trade.

1. It freezes at startup or will not open

  1. Start clean. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager. If NinjaTrader is still listed from an earlier session, select it and click End task.
  2. Start in Safe Mode: search the Windows Start menu for NinjaTrader (Safe Mode), or hold Ctrl while you double-click the NinjaTrader icon until the login screen appears. Confirm it under Help › About, where “Safe Mode” shows next to the version number. Safe Mode does not load your workspaces, does not connect automatically, and does not load custom add-ons.
  3. If it opens normally in Safe Mode, the platform is fine and something it loads is the problem. Connect manually from the Connections menu, then open your workspaces one at a time to see which one hangs. Do not save any workspace while in Safe Mode, or you may overwrite your real setup.
  4. If NinjaTrader shows in Task Manager but no window appears, close it and rename Documents\NinjaTrader 8\UI.xml to OldUI.xml. This step comes from NinjaTrader staff guidance on their forum. NinjaTrader builds a new UI.xml at the next start. Renaming instead of deleting lets you put the old file back, and only the interface preferences stored in that one file are reset.
  5. Still stuck? Repair the install: close NinjaTrader, open the Windows Control Panel (not the Settings app), go to Programs and Features, select NinjaTrader, and click Repair.

OneDrive check. If OneDrive backs up your Documents folder, NinjaTrader’s files live inside a synced folder. In our support experience, that is a recurring cause of crashes and missing files. NinjaTrader says the two usually work together, but it documents sync failures that cause errors such as “Unhandled exception: Access to the path … is denied.” If that sounds familiar, follow our NinjaTrader and OneDrive guide, which walks through stopping the sync, moving the NinjaTrader 8 folder to a local Documents folder, and reinstalling.

Reinstall only as a last resort. NinjaTrader recommends a full reinstall only when the problem also happens in Safe Mode, and they ask you to contact their support chat first. Before you do anything that drastic, make a backup with Tools › Export › Backup File… and include your workspaces, templates, and NinjaScript. It saves to Documents\NinjaTrader 8 Backup by default, and Tools › Import › Backup File… restores it.

2. It freezes while historical data or many charts load

If NinjaTrader goes unresponsive right after you connect, while charts show “Loading,” it is often still processing more historical data than your PC can handle at once. Reduce the load:

  1. Open the Data Series window on each heavy chart (Ctrl+F), set Load data based on to Days, and lower Days Back. NinjaTrader notes this helps most on tick-based charts.
  2. In the same window, turn off Tick Replay unless an indicator truly needs it. NinjaTrader warns that it uses more PC resources.
  3. Close workspaces you are not using. In the Workspaces menu, a green box marks the active workspace and a gray box marks one that is open and still calculating in the background.
  4. Close charts and tabs you do not need. Hidden tabs keep calculating, and several charts of the same instrument add load.
  5. Turn on Connect on start up for your connection under Connections › Configure. NinjaTrader suggests this so a workspace loads its data once, instead of loading and then reloading after you connect. If Configure is not on the Connections menu, turn on Multi-provider first: Tools > Settings > General, tick Multi-provider, click OK, then close NinjaTrader and open it again (why Configure is missing).
  6. If several heavy workspaces open at every start, turn off Reopen all previously open workspaces at startup under Tools › Settings › General.
  7. If loading keeps getting slower or one chart hangs every time, clear the historical data cache. Close NinjaTrader, open Documents\NinjaTrader 8\db, and delete only the cache, tick, minute, and day folders. This deletes the chart data stored on this PC, and it downloads again from your provider the next time you connect, so the first load is slower. Do not delete or move any other folder there. If you imported historical data your provider does not supply, export it first with Tools › Export › Historical Data.

Our NinjaTrader maintenance guide covers the cache, Reset DB, and Safe Mode in more depth.

3. It freezes in fast markets or around news

If NinjaTrader runs fine in quiet markets and stalls at the open or during news, the extra market data is likely exposing something heavy. Find it with NinjaTrader’s own tool before you change anything:

  1. In the Control Center, click New › NinjaScript Output.
  2. Right-click inside that window and choose NinjaScript Utilization Monitor.
  3. Leave it running for 2 to 5 minutes during a busy market. It only measures from the moment you open it, so open it before the busy period.
  4. Look at the top of the list. Those indicators and strategies used the most processing time. A heavy script is not always badly written, since some do a lot of work by design, but it is the first place to look.

Then lighten the load:

  • Set each indicator’s Calculate to On bar close or On price change in the Indicators window (Ctrl+I). NinjaTrader says On each tick only helps indicators that count volume or ticks, so keep it only where the developer says it is needed.
  • Use the Global crosshair on fewer charts.
  • If you do not use Playback, turn off Enable market recording of playback under Tools › Settings › Market data.
  • Close other programs competing for your PC, and restart NinjaTrader daily, as NinjaTrader recommends.

If charts fall behind price but never fully lock up, see why NinjaTrader is slow or lagging.

4. It freezes during Playback or Market Replay

  • Know what normal looks like. During Market Replay, NinjaTrader’s interface only redraws once per second by design, while orders, indicators, and strategies still calculate as they would in real time. A chart that moves in steps is not frozen.
  • Right-click in the Playback Control window and check the mode. Playback from selected is the default and the fastest. Playback from start replays every day between the slider’s start and end, which NinjaTrader notes is slower because it processes more data. Use it only when a strategy needs it.
  • If it hangs at high speeds or at Max, step the speed down.
  • The load rules from sections 2 and 3 apply here too: fewer charts, no background workspaces, lighter Calculate settings, and Tick Replay only where needed.

5. It hangs when you close it, or keeps running after you exit

  1. Check your version under Help › About. NinjaTrader 8.1.8.1 (July 2026) fixed an issue where “NinjaTrader could occasionally remain running after exit.” If you are on an older version, updating is the fix. See should you update NinjaTrader.
  2. Save your workspaces before you exit (Workspaces › Save). Workspaces do not save on their own.
  3. If NinjaTrader is still running after you close it, open Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc), select NinjaTrader, and click End task. This closes it without saving, so workspace changes you have not saved are lost. Wait until it is gone from the list before you start NinjaTrader again.
  4. If every exit takes many minutes, send NinjaTrader your logs right after it happens (see below).

Find the add-on: test one at a time on a clean chart

If NinjaTrader runs normally in Safe Mode, NinjaTrader’s own advice is to rebuild from scratch, adding one component at a time. Here is a careful way to do it:

  1. Make a backup with Tools › Export › Backup File…
  2. Create a blank workspace with Workspaces › New and open one chart with no indicators or custom template.
  3. Add one add-on (an indicator, drawing tool, or window) and use it through the time of day your freezes usually happen.
  4. No freeze? Add the next one. When the freeze returns, the last add-on you added is the suspect. The NinjaScript Utilization Monitor from section 3 can confirm it.
  5. To take a suspect out completely, use Tools › Remove NinjaScript Assembly for protected add-ons (most paid ones), or open New › NinjaScript Editor, right-click the script, and choose Remove for unprotected ones. Removing deletes it from NinjaTrader, so keep the vendor’s install file, and ask the vendor about any special removal steps.

Yes, this includes our tools. If one of ours turns out to be the cause, tell us. We would rather know.

Collect logs and send them to NinjaTrader

NinjaTrader writes log and trace files that their support team uses to diagnose freezes. Note the time it froze, then:

  1. In the Control Center, go to Help › Message Support (called Email Support in older versions).
  2. Choose a category, enter the email on your NinjaTrader account, and describe when it froze and what you were doing.
  3. Leave the Log and Trace Files box checked (it is on by default) and send.

If NinjaTrader will not open, close it, open Documents\NinjaTrader 8, right-click the log folder and choose Compress To › ZIP File, repeat for the trace folder, and attach both zips to your email to NinjaTrader support. The raw files are in Documents\NinjaTrader 8\log and Documents\NinjaTrader 8\trace, and the Log tab in the Control Center shows recent errors.

Chart Studio (coming soon): see the pattern before a freeze

Our upcoming Chart Studio add-on includes free performance checks that may help you spot a pattern. Its processing lag monitor shows whether chart and instrument queues are falling behind, and when. Its memory monitor samples every 5 minutes, so you can see whether memory keeps climbing before a freeze. NinjaTrader notes that high memory on its own does not always mean poor performance, so the trend is what matters. Chart Studio measures; it does not prevent freezes or make NinjaTrader faster. It is opening soon and is not available to download yet.

Frequently asked questions

My screen is frozen and the chart won’t move. What do I do?

First check whether the Control Center still responds. If it does, the chart may simply not be getting data, so check your connection and see NinjaTrader market data delayed. If nothing responds, wait a minute, then end NinjaTrader in Task Manager and restart it.

NinjaTrader froze while I was in a trade. Can I close it and restart?

Yes, but manage the position at your broker first, through their web platform, app, or trade desk. Orders the broker already accepted are held there, not in the frozen window. Then restart NinjaTrader and compare its Positions and Orders tabs with the broker.

The Control Center became unresponsive and I had to kill NinjaTrader in Task Manager. Did I lose anything?

Ending NinjaTrader does not close your position or cancel orders your broker already accepted, but workspace changes you had not saved are gone. If a workspace comes back wrong, Tools › Database Management › Restore Workspace keeps recent versions (10 by default).

NinjaTrader goes completely unresponsive while historical data loads. Why?

It is often still processing more historical data than your PC can handle at once. Lower Days Back in the Data Series window, turn off Tick Replay where you do not need it, and close background workspaces (section 2).

It froze on reboot and there was no option for safe start. How do I get into Safe Mode?

Safe Mode starts from Windows, not from inside NinjaTrader. End any NinjaTrader process in Task Manager, then pick NinjaTrader (Safe Mode) from the Start menu, or hold Ctrl while you double-click the icon until the login screen appears.

Why does it take 15 minutes for NinjaTrader to close?

Versions before 8.1.8.1 could occasionally keep running after exit, so update first. If it still hangs, end it in Task Manager after saving your workspaces, and send NinjaTrader your logs.

Still freezing after all of this? Start with our slow and lagging guide or the maintenance checklist.
