Data Feeds & Connections

NinjaTrader Data Feeds & Connections

How market data actually works in NinjaTrader — what’s free, what comes with a funded account, and how to connect the three feeds futures traders actually use.

How market data works in NinjaTrader

New traders often assume market data is something you have to buy separately before NinjaTrader is useful. For most futures traders, it isn’t. In NinjaTrader, data arrives through a connection — and a connection does two jobs at once: it streams prices to your charts and routes your orders to an account. Set up the right connection and the data question answers itself.

That leaves only two situations to think about:

  • Practicing? Create a free NinjaTrader account and you can chart, backtest, and trade the built-in simulation account without paying anyone — NinjaTrader includes free data for simulated trading. It’s how most of our 8,000+ customers learned the platform. Brand new? Start with Getting Started with NinjaTrader.
  • Trading live or on a funded account? Real-time data comes bundled with the account itself. Fund a brokerage account or receive a prop-firm login, connect it, and your charts go live. There’s no separate “data feed product” to shop for.

So the practical question isn’t “which data feed should I buy?” It’s “which connection type does my account use?” For retail futures traders the answer is almost always one of three — covered next. (For the platform itself — what it is, what’s free, every setup guide — see the complete NinjaTrader guide.)

The three connections you’ll actually meet

NinjaTrader’s own brokerage

If you opened and funded your account directly with NinjaTrader, this is you. You log in to the platform with your NinjaTrader credentials and your account and live data are simply there — the simplest setup of the three, and the one the platform is built around.

Rithmic

Rithmic is order-routing and data technology used by many prop firms — Apex Trader Funding is the best-known example. You don’t sign up with Rithmic yourself: the firm issues you Rithmic credentials when your evaluation or funded account is activated, and you connect those credentials inside NinjaTrader. One wrinkle: a fresh NinjaTrader install only shows its own connection until you enable the Multi-Provider setting — our guide covers that switch and every screen after it.

Tradovate

Tradovate is part of the NinjaTrader family, and plenty of prop firms issue Tradovate logins instead of Rithmic ones. The setup path differs depending on whether you already have a NinjaTrader account of your own — a detail that trips people up, and one the guide below handles both ways.

Step-by-step instructions for each, with screenshots:

Not sure which one you need? Check the welcome email from your broker or prop firm — it names the connection type and contains the credentials you’ll enter.

How to connect (the short version)

Every connection follows the same shape — only the provider-specific screen in the middle changes, and that’s what the dedicated guides above are for.

  1. Get your credentials. A Rithmic or Tradovate username and password from your prop firm, or your own NinjaTrader login. Prop-firm credentials arrive when the firm activates your account.
  2. Set up the connection. In NinjaTrader, open Control Center → Connections — this is where connections are created, managed, and started. Pick your provider and enter your credentials. The exact fields differ by provider, so follow the matching guide: Rithmic, Tradovate, or Apex.
  3. Connect and verify. Start the connection from that same menu, then confirm everything is flowing before you trade.
✅ You’re connected when: the connection status is green, your account appears in the Control Center, and prices are updating on a chart (open one from Control Center → New).
⚠️ Enter credentials exactly as issued. Prop-firm logins are usually auto-generated, and a stray space from copy-paste is the most common cause of a failed first connection we see.

When the connection misbehaves

Connection problems almost always come down to one of three things: credentials, the provider’s servers, or something on your PC interfering. Work through these:

Connection shows yellow or red

Green means connected; yellow and red mean the link to your provider is down or trying to recover. Restart the connection from Control Center → Connections. If it won’t come back: check your internet, re-enter your credentials (watch for trailing spaces), and restart NinjaTrader. Prop-firm logins can also be deactivated on the firm’s side — for example between an evaluation ending and a funded account activating — so if nothing works, confirm with your firm that the login is still active. For account- or platform-level data issues, NinjaTrader support is the right door.

Connected, but charts aren’t updating — or orders look stuck

If the status is green but a chart looks frozen, right-click the chart and choose Reload NinjaScript to refresh everything running on it, or close and reopen the chart. If the orders themselves are stuck — showing as working when they shouldn’t be, or refusing to cancel — follow How to Reset Frozen Orders in NinjaTrader.

OneDrive is interfering with NinjaTrader

NinjaTrader keeps its working files under your Documents folder, and when OneDrive syncs or offloads that folder, all kinds of strange behavior follows — including startup and data problems that look like feed issues. If NinjaTrader misbehaves on a machine with OneDrive, read Resolving NinjaTrader Issues with OneDrive before blaming your data feed.

New machine or reinstalled Windows — and now add-ons complain?

Connections and licenses are separate systems. If your add-ons throw license errors after a hardware change, that’s usually your Machine ID, not your data feed — see the Machine ID guide. Need to reinstall the tools themselves? The install guide takes about two minutes.

Prop-firm traders: many accounts, one data feed

Prop-firm traders rarely stop at one account. Pass one evaluation and the natural next move is running several funded accounts side by side — often under the same Rithmic or Tradovate login, so they all appear under a single connection in NinjaTrader.

What you don’t want is to place every trade several times by hand. That’s exactly the job of the NinjaTrader Trade Copier: trade your lead account, and it copies entries, exits, stops, and targets across every follower account in real time — whether they sit on the same connection or are spread across multiple firms.

For the full setup — connections, account grouping, and copier settings — read How to Trade Multiple Prop-Firm Accounts on NinjaTrader. And if you’re still equipping the lead account, browse the full add-on catalog.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to pay for market data to practice on NinjaTrader?

No. The desktop platform is free for charting, backtesting, and simulated trading, and NinjaTrader includes free data for exactly that. You only need a funded brokerage or prop-firm account — which brings live data with it — when you’re ready to trade real money. The Getting Started guide walks through the free setup.

What’s the difference between Rithmic and Tradovate?

Both are order-routing and data technologies that prop firms use to deliver accounts — you don’t choose between them, your firm does. The connection steps inside NinjaTrader differ, which is why we keep a separate Rithmic guide and Tradovate guide. Check your firm’s welcome email to see which credentials you were issued.

Can I run multiple prop-firm accounts on one data feed?

Yes — accounts under the same Rithmic or Tradovate login typically appear together under a single connection in NinjaTrader. To trade them all without placing every order by hand, use the Trade Copier, which mirrors your lead account across every follower in real time. Full walkthrough in our multiple-accounts guide.

Why does my connection show yellow or red?

The link to your provider is down or trying to recover. Restart the connection from Control Center → Connections, check your internet, and re-enter your credentials — a stray space from copy-paste is the most common culprit. If it persists, confirm with your prop firm that the login is still active, or contact NinjaTrader support for account-level issues.

Do Affordable Indicators tools require a specific data feed?

No — our add-ons run inside NinjaTrader Desktop and work with whatever connection your account uses: NinjaTrader’s own brokerage, Rithmic, or Tradovate. They’re licensed to your computer rather than your data feed, via your Machine ID.

Still stuck? We’re quick.
