What is the ADX indicator and what does it measure?
The ADX, or Average Directional Index, measures the strength of a trend, not its direction. It plots a line on a 0 to 100 scale, calculated from a moving average of price range over a set period. A lower ADX value usually means a non trending or ranging market, and a higher value means a trending market. The Best ADX Indicator plots it in NinjaTrader 8 with extra signal and alert options.
What ADX value means a strong trend?
A common breakdown is 0 to 10 for no trend, 10 to 20 for a weak trend, 20 to 40 for a moderate trend, 40 to 50 for a strong trend, and above 50 for a very strong trend. Readings near the top of the scale are rare. A rising ADX suggests a strengthening trend, and a falling ADX suggests it is losing steam.
Which indicator works best with ADX?
ADX pairs well with ATR, the Average True Range. ADX shows how strong a trend is, while ATR shows how much price is moving. Breakout traders often look for ADX above 20 with ATR rising to confirm follow through, and treat an ATR spike with ADX below 20 as a likely false signal. Both are direction neutral, so they support long and short setups.
How is the Best ADX Indicator different from the ADX in NinjaTrader 8?
NinjaTrader 8 includes a standard ADX. The Best ADX Indicator adds +DI and -DI crossover signals, chart or indicator highlighting when ADX is above or below a level you set, multi time frame calculations, and sound, NinjaTrader alert and email notifications. It also integrates with Signal Entry Orders for semi automated entries, which the built-in ADX does not offer.
Can I get alerts from the ADX indicator in NinjaTrader?
Yes, when its signal fires. The Best ADX Indicator signals a crossover of the +DI and -DI lines, and each signal can play a sound, post a NinjaTrader alert, send an email and mark the chart with an arrow or background color. It also draws upper and lower ADX levels you can change, such as 20 and 40, and colors the ADX line when it is above or below them.
Can I calculate ADX from a different time frame than my chart?
Yes. The multi time frame feature lets you add the Best ADX Indicator to any chart window while choosing a secondary data feed for its calculations. That way you can read trend strength from a higher time frame while you trade from a faster chart.
Can ADX signals place trades automatically in NinjaTrader?
They can be semi automated. The Best ADX Indicator integrates with Signal Entry Orders, an Enhanced Chart Trader module sold separately. You arm a buy or sell signal button, and when the signal occurs an entry order is submitted using the account, quantity and ATM strategy already set on the Enhanced Chart Trader panel.
